Monsoon 2019 hits Northeast India

Rain in Northeast India has picked in intensity post June 12. In the last 24 hours, heavy to extremely heavy rains were witnessed in parts of Assam while the rest of Northeast India received light to moderate rains at many places.

At present, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Northeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas. This Cyclonic Circulation will gradually move towards Northeast India leading to a further increase in rainfall activity. When the system moves closer, we expect heavy to very heavy rains at many places in the region, with light at some places.

Although Monsoon has advanced in some more parts of Northeast India, conditions now look more avourable for the Monsoon to make advancement into the entire northeast region.

So, in the next 24 to 48 hours, we expect Monsoon to reach Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim covering all the Northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. These on and off rainfall activity is likely to continue for at least next three to four days.

Rainfall statistics of Northeast India are still bleak. Almost all the states of Northeast are rain deficient at present, but we expect the shortfall to be covered in the next week due to the likely increase in rainfall activity in the region.

So, we can say that Monsoon is all set to cover Northeast India. These rains might trigger flash floods in some parts of northeastern states like Assam and Meghalaya. Lightning strikes and isolated hailstorm activities cannot be ruled out.
