Northeast India has not seen good rains making an appearance for quite some time. Moreover, the last five seasons have been below normal with rains being on the lower side. The months of January as well as February so far have remained rainless with showers on the backseat only.
However, rains are all set to make an appearance over many parts of Northeast India. Scattered rains are likely to commence over the states of Nagaland, Meghalaya as well as Assam today. In fact, Sikkim along with the state of Arunachal Pradesh will not only see some rainfall activity but snowfall will also be seen over the higher reaches today onward.
The state of Nagaland has remained dry for some time wherein the rain deficiency between January 1 and February 7 is at a whopping -61 percent wherein the state has seen 9.7 mm of rains against the normal of 24.9 mm. However, in the next two to three days, many parts of the state including Mon, Mokokchung, Dimapur and adjoining regions may see some rainfall activities.
The reason for these upcoming rains is a northeast trough which is extending from Uttarakhand to Northeast India, particularly East Assam across Sub Himalayan West Bengal and the foothills of the Himalayas.
Rainfall intensity is expected to increase on February 9 and 10. Many parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland may see light to moderate rainfall activities. In fact, few hailstorm activities are also likely in some parts.
Weather will start to clear up from February 11. In fact, moisture incursion is taking place from the Bay of Bengal up to mid levels and a deep trough is also expected to form on February 9 and 10 from Northern Assam to North Bay of Bengal at 3 km of sea level.
All these factors are likely to give good rains over the above mentioned states.
