One person dead after police shooting in Salt Lake City

Police officers say they shot and killed a man who shot at them Monday night near downtown Salt Lake City.

The man, Riche Antonio Santiago, 29, died at the scene, Salt Lake City Police Lt. Greg Wilking told reporters in a Tuesday morning briefing.

The officers responded to a 911 call, in which the caller abruptly hung up the phone. The officers went to the Park Place Apartments at 350 E. 700 South about 7 p.m. Monday.

Santiago “shot at our officers, and our officers returned fire,” Wilking said, calling it “a very dynamic, quick incident.” Santiago received medical aid, but died from his wounds. The officers were uninjured, Wilking said.

A witness told FOX 13 that he heard multiple gunshots in rapid succession. "No more than two or three seconds, 12 loud sounds,” Ransom Smith told FOX 13. “I don`t know how much was echoes and how much was gunshots.”

Police don’t know yet what Santiago was doing at the building, why he shot at police or why 911 was called, Wilking said.

Salt Lake City police have handed the investigation over to the West Valley City police, and the officers have been put on paid administrative leave — both standard protocols when police shoot someone.
