A TOTAL of 11 cars were broken into in an early hours attack in a Taunton neighbourhood.

A man was arrested in Shakespeare Avenue after a member of the public called 999 reporting someone car smashing windows.

Officers who rushed to the scene at around 4.30am on Friday, March 15, discovered the 11 damaged vehicles, most in Shakespeare Avenue, but with some in neighbouring streets.

A man in his 20s was arrested in the street within half an hour on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle, six counts of criminal damage, and three of vehicle interference.

He was later released under investigation while officers make further enquiries, including CCTV checks.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "Officers are grateful to the witness who called to report the incident as it happened.

"We would always encourage people to report suspicious behaviour in their community."

Police also recommend setting the alarm as well as locking your car whenever you leave it and emptying it of valuables and leaving the glove box open to show there’s nothing there.
