A BUSY Taunton road is to be closed in the evenings for resurfacing work.

Highways maintenance teams will start work on a stretch of Staplegrove Road on June 9.

The section of the road will be closed each evening for an anticipated 10 days.

The work will see 300 metres of the route - from just southeast of Westerkirk Gate, covering the Manor Road and Showell Park junctions, before finishing northwest of the Showell Park junction on the A358 - resurfaced.

Works will restore the road’s profile, protect its foundations and improve skid conditions and will be carried out under an evening road closure between 6.30pm and 11.30pm.

During these hours, an alternative route will be clearly signposted, Somerset County Council said.

Preparatory works are currently underway and there are signs on site to help road users plan ahead.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said the timing of the work meant crews could take advantage of quieter roads as people stayed at home during the coronavirus crisis.

“It’s good that our fantastic highways teams can get on with their work while the roads are quieter at present,” he said.

“Although we’ve planned the works during off-peak times make sure that you plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.”
