A Bath pub has responded after a 'chemical spill' forced '30 people' to evacuate the pub on Wednesday night (March 20).

Fire, ambulance and police services were called to the scene, off Frome Road, Odd Down at around 7:30pm.

Avon Fire and Rescue said that four crews were sent to deal with the incident, which the service said was caused by a spillage of cleaning chemicals.

One witness recalled seeing people coughing as they left the building.

Ambulance services confirmed that 21 people were seen to, but were all ok.

Mitchells & Butlers, the company which owns the The Red Lion, said the area has been cleared to reopen by an Environmental Health Officer and an investigation into the spillage is underway.

A witness, who was at the Red Lion at the time of the incident, said: "People were coughing, including us.

"After about five minutes a man arrived and said he was with the emergency services and we needed to leave.

"We went out into the Red Lion car park and some people went out the front, we waited for a bit then left."

Bath Fire Station also sent out a tweet to confirm that around 30 people had been evacuated.

What the Red Lion said

A spokesperson for Mitchells & Butlers said: “We worked closely with the fire and ambulance services to make sure all our guests were evacuated quickly and safely from the building.

"The EHO have since visited and are happy the pub is safe. An investigation into what happened is underway.”
