Yeovil helicopter manufacturer Leonardo has unvelied plans to upgrade its grass airfield with a hard surfaced runway and extra lighting.

Details of its plans where displayed in the town on Friday afternoon (May 24).

A spokesman for the firm said the upgrade was not designed to encourage more aeroplanes to use the airfield.

Leonardo spokesman Geoff Russell said: "The runway will allow for small fixed wing aircraft to take off and land, but that will not be part of our day-to-day operations.

"It is not our intention to encourage fixed wing aircraft to the Leonardo airfield.

"There will be a very small number coming into the runway.

"The existing runway has not been up to standard for some time, and there are occasions when a short runway is needed during helicopter testing.

"The existing runway is uneven in places, so during this project we will be looking to level out the undulating ground.

"There is already approach lighting on the eastern side of the runway. We will be adding similar low level lighting to the Western side.

"The work will also include a very small light control building measuring 4 metres by 6 metres.

"We will not be disclosing the estimated cost of the work at this stage, as we will be looking to tender for the work in the future. However, this represents a significant investment in Yeovil.

"If all goes well we are looking to start work in March 2020 and it will take roughly six months to complete.

"For the duration of the work, a small, temporary construction yard will be created on the western edge of the existing grass runway so construction vehicles can have easy access to the construction site from the road and do not have to drive through the leonardo site."
