Long delays are building on the M5 northbound after a lorry broke down on the motorway this morning (June 24).

Lane 1 has been closed between J22 and J21 to facilitate repairs to the vehicle, though complications have led to lengthy delays.

Highways England has tweeted: "Due to complications with recovery of a broken down lorry there are long delays in the area. Please plan your journeys around this."

Traffic is once again running freely after an earlier broken down lorry on the M5 northbound between J22 and J21.

Update on police incident between J23 and J24

According to Travel Somerset, slow traffic remains both ways between J23 and J24 due to an earlier police incident.

All lanes have now been re-opened.

However, Highways England continues to report lengthy delays as a result of the incident and a broken down lorry between J22 and J21. Twelve kilometres of traffic have been reported. Drivers are encouraged to consider other routes.

'Over 12 km of traffic'

There is now over 12 kilometres of traffic on the M5 northbound after a lorry break down and a separate police incident. Drivers are advised to consider other routes.

Highways England has tweeted: “Due to further issues with the broken down lorry and a separate police incident #M5 Northbound between J22 #Edithmead and J21 #WestonSuperMare is experiencing long delays with over 12km of traffic queueing. Please beware of this and consider other routes.”
