Stopping at a motorway service station is not always convenient, but it is necessary.

If you are tired, need the toilet or just want to break up the journey, it is important to take a break.

But, where is the best place to stop?

New research, conducted by Northgate Vehicle Hire, has ranked the best and worst service stations in the UK, issuing them with a score out of 100.

The scoring criteria included quality of service, number of restaurants, number of parking spaces, bathroom facilities and more.

Only one stop on the M5 makes the top 10 however, and that is in Exeter.

Somerset motorists may also be familiar with Leigh Delamere services, which also sneaks onto the list.

Bottom of the pile is Todhills (South), on the M6, coming in at 112th.

The best motorway

If you’re travelling on the M11 then you’re in luck – with an average score of 85 points, this motorway ranked the best for available service stations.

This was thanks to a solid score from Birchanger Green services, which boasts 8 different food outlets.

London’s M25 placed eleventh on the list, and the M1 came in ninth.

Motorists hitting the M23 in Surrey, however, aren’t in for a good stop, with an average score of 63.
