The investigation into an explosion near Weston-super-Mare is still going nearly a month on, police have confirmed.

Two men were arrested on May 14 after a small device was found in a lane in Appletree Court, Worle, following reports of two loud bangs at around 4.30am.

Officers and the army's bomb squad descended on the area in the hours that followed, with searches being carried out at a local address and a house in Forth Avenue, Portishead.

The pair, aged 20 and 21, were then bailed the following day.

Today (Tuesday, June 11), a spokeswoman for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "The two people arrested are still on bail and enquiries are ongoing."

"Scary"

Experts quickly assessed on May 14 that the device did not pose a risk to the public, with the police adding that there was "no ongoing risk" and incident was not being treated as terrorism-related.

Surrounding roads had been closed initially, which caused problems for rush hour commuters.

The nearby rail station - Worle - was also affected although not shut.

Residents spoke of their alarm and surprise at waking to see a blue lights outside their homes on.

Jayne Townley said: "It’s very scary - you don’t know what’s going on.

"I didn’t hear the bang, but my son said he heard what sounded like someone knocking on his door at around 4:30am.

"My husband tried to go out at about 7am to walk down Appletree Court but was told he wasn’t allowed down there - that was the first I knew."

Ms Townley's mum, Marcia Williams, added: ""The police said go and get your purse, your phone and your jacket and we’ll take you over to the Summerhouse pub.

"I was amazed to find the bomb squad outside."

Speaking previously, a police spokesman praised local people for their help during the incident.

He said: "Investigations like this can only be undertaken with the assistance and support of the local community.

"We fully appreciate this can sometimes be inconvenient and genuinely appreciate the understanding and support of those directly affected by it."
