A large emergency services response was sent to the scene of a grain storage fire in Yeovil yesterday (May 9).

Firefighters were called to the industrial estate at Babylon View, Yeovil at around 9.40am.

They arrived to find several patches of fire within an agricultural grain hopper and had to dig away at large mounds of grain to fully put out the fire.

Four fire engines attended, along with an incident support unit.

Sharing photos on Facebook, Yeovil Fire Station said: “Fire crews from Yeovil were mobilised to reports of a building fire within the industrial estate of Babylon view, Yeovil.

“Upon arrival this was found to be several small seats of fire within an industrial agricultural grain hopper.

“Three appliances from Yeovil and one appliance from Sherborne, plus an incident support unit from Yeovil attended.

“Six breathing apparatus were used as crews attempted to get at hotspots within grain by digging away the mounds of grain within and surrounding the industrial hopper.

“One hosereel jet was used to extinguish as well as removal of a large amount of grain.

“Having accessed and extinguished the hotspots, crews then dampened down the grain and surrounding area.

“Cause of this fire was accidental.”
