Approximately 30 people were evacuated from a pub in Bath due to a chemical spillage on Wednesday night (March 20).

At around 7.30pm, fire, ambulance and police crews were called to the Red Lion pub, off Frome Road, in Odd Down.

Avon Fire said four fire crews attended the incident where a chemical spillage had taken place involving cleaning chemicals.

A witness said that it took place at the Red Lion pub.

The fire service said around 30 people were evacuated from the building.

A witness, who was at the Red Lion at the time, said: "People were coughing, including us. After about five minutes a man arrived and said he was with the emergency services and we needed to leave.

"We went out into the Red Lion car park and some people went out the front, we waited for a bit then left."

The Bath Fire Station Twitter page then tweeted about the incident later that night.

The tweet read: "Joint working tonight @ASPolice @Wilts_SWASFT @SWASFTHART  to resolve an incident which involved cleaning chemicals.

"Breathing apparatus was used with gas detection monitors to find the source, while ambulance crews dealt with approximately 20 casualty's, all ok #teamwork ."


A spokesman for Avon Fire said: "Two crews from Bath and two from Patchway fire station were called a chemical spillage in a commercial property involving cleaning chemicals.

"On arrival, two firefighters in breathing apparatus used gas monitors to locate the source of the spillage. 

"Around 30 people were evacuated from the building and treated at the scene by ambulance crews. 

"Police were also in attendance."

A South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokeswoman said: "At 19:29 SWAST received calls about an incident affecting people at the Red Lion, Wellsway, Bath.

"We responded with an ambulance and SWAST specialist resources from Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), and an a Operational Officer.

"SWAST were also supported by Fire [log 3423] and Police [log 1040].

"21 patients were discharged at scene."

The ambulance service said that they were not transported to hospital.
