Firefighters and a farmer worked rescue a cow which was stuck in a water-filled ditch in a Somerset village.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called to Shapwick, near Glastonbury, to help free the stranded cow just after 8pm on Monday (August 19)

Two fire crews were sent to the scene and with the help of a local farmer, the cow was freed using a tractor and other equipment.

A fire service spokesman wrote: "One fire appliance from Glastonbury and the special rescue team from Bridgwater were sent to a cow stuck in a water filled ditch.

"Crews arrived on scene and requested the 4x4 vehicle from Glastonbury to assist with access.

"Crews rescued the cow with assistance from a local farmer using a tractor and lines.

"Lighting and scene safety equipment was also used. Duty of care was left with the farmer."
