Fire fighters have been seen battling a thatched roof fire that damaged two properties in Crowcombe on Sunday night (March 24).

Pictures tweeted by a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service employee show firefighters on the roof as smoke pours from the building.

Eleven fire engine were called to deal with the fire at around 8:10pm from several surrounding towns, including Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington.

The fire service were commended in the tweet for their 'great work' after managing to save 90 per cent of the contents from the property.

However, according to the incident report, the incident caused fire damage to two properties.

The initial incident report read: "Once the crews got in attendance the officer in charge confirmed the thatch of the property to be well alight.

"Crews were at work trying to create a fire break by stripping the thatch off the roof of the property.

"The crews also had four hose reel jets, one thatching lance, one compressed air foam jet, 2 main jets, 4 breathing apparatus, two 13.5 metre ladders and one roof ladder in use.

"Due to the volume of smoke coming from this fire all residents within the area of Crowcombe were advised to keep all windows and doors shut until the incident was been resolved."

The fire was still raging at around midnight and fire crews were still at the scene by 5am the following morning, working on dampening down hot spots.

The cause of the fire is believed to accidental, according to the fire service.
