The ruins of a a family home in Bath have been demolished more than two years after a devastating fire forced a mum and her children to flee.

The former home on Shaws Way was gutted in just 20 minutes by an accidental fire on May 24, 2017 - leaving the remains uninhabitable. Thankfully, the family inside made a lucky escape.

The fire destroyed the ground floor, first floor and roof of the property, and an unsightly shell was left in its place.

The ruins were left standing for more than two years, with one fed up neighbour describing the former home as a "disgrace".

Katherine, a resident of Shaws Way told Somerset Live in January: "I can't believe that the house is still in that condition. It's a disgrace living next to it.

"The house next door was trying to sell their house before the fire happened and they can't sell because nobody wants a house with that next door."

Building work started on the property in April, and Twerton Councillor Sarah Moore had expressed relief when builders arrived at the site.

She said: "Really good to finally see builders at the burnt out house on Shaws Way, let's hope it gets sorted out quickly."

Similarly, Twerton councillor, Tim Ball said he was "relieved" to see that the building was finally going to be removed.

Plans to replace the home were approved by the council in December 2017, and allow "demolition of existing three bedroom house with a side extension due to extensive fire damage which is beyond repair to allow for a similar three bedroom house to be built."

If they choose to follow through with the plans from 2017, the new home would be similar in design to the one knocked down.
