An investigation continues into an "exchange of handguns" in plain sight in Yeovil town centre.

Staff at Porter Dodson solicitors office say they witnessed the incident and immediately called the police, sparking an armed police manhunt through the town.

An armed response was sent to the scene to search for the people involved, and officers and dog units were also spotted by locals at the Roping Road and Sparrow Road areas of the town.

Officers holding guns were seen by locals entering a property on Roping Road, near to Yeovil Hospital.

Three people were arrested following the incident and a police spokesman has confirmed today (August 21) that two remain under investigation.

A 31-year-old man and 49-year-old man have been released under investigation, while a 51-year-old woman has been released without charge.

At the time of the incident the police said they believed the weapons to be imitation firearms, but the force has not confirmed this.

The day after the incident, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Two men were seen to exchange what appeared to be two handguns on The Park at about 5.30pm.

“A search of the area was carried out by armed officers but the people involved had already left the area.

“Two men, aged 31 and 49, and a 51-year-old woman were later arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

“Two firearms, believed to be imitation weapons, have been recovered. "

A spokesman for Porter Dodson praised staff at the office for the "calm and professional way" in which they dealt with the incident.

The spokesman said: "Following an incident outside our Yeovil office last night we contacted Avon and Somerset police, who subsequently attended the office.

"At no time were staff or clients in any danger.

"We are immensely proud of our staff, who dealt with the matter in a calm and professional way.

"They were able to assist the police, who are now investigating the matter further."
