Land at a Wells leisure centre has been ‘invaded’ by travellers who are understood to have been parked there for almost a week.

Somerset Live understands that a number of caravans and vehicles pitched up on a grass area at Wells Sport & Fitness on Charter Way last week.

The group, which includes at least four people, remained at the centre at 1pm on Tuesday (June 11).

Services at the leisure centre have not been affected by the arrival of the travellers and it remains open as usual.

Wells mayor John Osman said he had received complaints about the behaviour of the group.

He said: “They’ve invaded the green space so no children can use it, and I had complaints over the weekend from parents with children who had been there that they had been met by hostility.

“I understand that these people are travellers and have their way of life but the distressing thing is that this is a grass area that is used by the community.

“If they’d put their vehicles into one area it wouldn’t be as much of an issue, but the way in which they’ve spread themselves out has meant that the area has lost its enjoyment.”

The land that the travellers have parked on is owned by Mendip District Council and has been leased to Fusion Lifestyle, which runs the leisure centre and would have responsibility for serving eviction notices on the group.

Wells Sport & Leisure has been contacted for a comment.
