A Bath woman says she was shocked by the language in a play currently on at the Theatre Royal.

Lyn Clarke, from Widcombe, wrote to Bath.Live disgusted by the number of times “the F word” was used in The Argument.

The play, running until August 24, is by best-selling novelist and screenwriter William Boyd and stars Felicity Kendal.

The Argument is marketed as a “darkly funny play” which takes a “blistering look at the complexities of human relationships and how arguments can provide a catalyst for brutal honesty.”

But for Mrs Clarke – it was a bit too brutal.

Below is her letter to the editor in full.

She said: “I was given two tickets to go to Bath Theatre Royal on Thursday by a dear friend as they could not go.

“We thought great, a night out.

"It was Felicity Kendall and five other actors. The Argument was the name of the play.

“Well I could not believe the number of times the F word was used and one word was the C word which was saved to near the end otherwise I would have walked out earlier.

“I can’t believe someone has to pay £85 to sit and listen to that sort of language throughout.

“I’m not a prude but I’m so glad I wasn’t the one to pay for the tickets.

“My friend would have walked out way before we did and it was only on for 1hr 15mins."

“Although Felicity Kendall was the only one who never swore it surprised me an actress of her standing would put her name to this play.

“Whoever wrote this ain’t clever.”

The Argument is on at the Theatre Royal until Saturday. Available tickets appear to range from £30.75 to £46.75.
