A man who refused to put down a knife at Yeovil Hospital was Tasered by police today (July 31).

Avon and Somerset police said they received a call about a concern for welfare incident at the hospital, in Higher Kingston, at around 1pm.

The force said the man was making threats to harm himself and as he refused to put down the knife, officers Tasered him.

Police said he has since been detained and was taken to the hospital's emergency department.

An Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a concern for welfare at Yeovil District Hospital at about 1pm. 

"A man was making threats to harm himself with a knife. 

"Because he refused to put the knife down officers Tasered the man, who was detained and taken to the hospital’s emergency department to be checked over."

A spokesman for Yeovil Hospital said no-one else was hurt during the incident.

A spokesman for Yeovil Hospital said: "A man is being cared for within our emergency department following an incident in our main reception just after 1pm today.

“Public and staff were cleared from the area by our security staff whilst police attended to deal with the individual who had threatened to harm himself.

“No-one else was hurt during the incident.

“We would like to thank the public who were present within the reception at the time for their cooperation, and our staff for their calm and quick response.”
