A new coronavirus-related death has been confirmed in Somerset today (Wednesday, May 27), as reported by daily NHS figures.

The death has been confirmed within the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust on Friday (May 22), with a single death confirmed on that day.

The number of deaths at Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust is now at 61.

The total deaths across the county now stand at 132. This figure does not include people who may have died of coronavirus at home or in care homes.

Until today's update, no new coronavirus-related deaths in hospitals had been reported since Monday (May 25).

The total number of people with coronavirus to have died under the care of each of Somerset's six hospital trusts since the start of the virus outbreak are as follows:

  • Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust - 61 (+1)
  • Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (includes Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and a number of smaller community hospitals across the county) - 42
  • Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - 21
  • Virgin Care Ltd - Paulton Memorial Hospital - 4
  • Weston Area Health NHS Trust - 3
  • Virgin Care Ltd - St Martin's Hospital, Bath - 1

The South West remains to see the lowest numbers of coronavirus-related deaths across the country, with 1,174 deaths.

This is less than half of the South East's death toll, with 3,013 deaths reported across the region.

As of 9am today, NHS England has announced 183 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 26,049.

Of the 183 new deaths announced today:

– 24 occurred on May 26
– 64 occurred on May 25
– 28 occurred on May 24

As of 9am yesterday, 1,323 people tested positive for coronavirus across the whole of Somerset.
