A person died after being hit by a train in Somerset.

Trains between Taunton and Castle Cary railway stations were affected this morning (Monday, March 25) and Network Rail posted details of emotional support charity Samaritans.

British Transport Police said the casualty was pronounced dead at the scene near Langport.

A spokesman told Somerset Live: “At around 8.15am today (25 March) British Transport Police were called to line close to Langport, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Officers attended the scene, alongside colleagues from Avon and Somerset police and the ambulance service, however a person was sadly declared dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to inform their family and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

We have also contacted the ambulance service for more details.

In an update at 10.35am, Network Rail said normal service would resume by noon.

"A person was hit by a train earlier today between Castle Cary and Taunton," the update read.

"Trains are now beginning to return to normal, however, trains may still be delayed by up to 45 minutes or revised whilst service recovers.

"Disruption is expected to continue until approximately 12:00."
