A former furniture shop in Yeovil could be converted into a Crossfit gym.

Planning documents recently submitted indicate a local gym owner is hoping to move his existing facility in the town to a site on Goldcroft which formerly housed popular store Furnicare.

Yeovil shoppers were left upset in August 2018 when the furniture shop, which was "a lifeline for people who now have nowhere to go" according to one local, closed its doors.

But now the building could see a new lease of life if plans are approved by South Somerset District Council.

Writing to the local authority, Benjamin McKenzie, from BMB Fitness on Boundary Way, is asking to change the use of the building from Light Industrial to Leisure.

He wrote: "BM Barbell & Fitness opened September 2017. It is the only CrossFit gym in Yeovil and provides a unique service for those looking to improve their health and fitness, something likely to be at the forefront of many people's minds once the lockdown is lifted.

"The gym has been growing and we are looking for a larger facility to better serve our current members and support new members.

"BMB Fitness is a class-based gym. Classes run throughout the day with a limit of twelve people per class.

"We also provide nutrition advice, and currently have a number of NHS staff, for whom the move would be very convenient."

Mr McKenzie added that music would be used during classes at the proposed new facility, but he believes it would not be at a level that would impact local residents.

Mr McKenzie wrote: "As well as the site being adjacent to a public car park, the landlords have provided adequate parking for our members - 16 spaces.

"One of the staff lives very close by and would not require parking."

CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen that began in the US in 2000 and quickly gained popularity in the UK and across the world.

It is a high-intensity exercise system, incorporating elements from interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting and gymmnastics.

Furnicare had been trading at 32 Goldcroft for 25 years before it closed more than 20 months ago.
