Mystery has surrounded a post box that suddenly turned blue in Somerset.

Residents and shoppers in Taunton were left scratching their heads after a man was spotted painting a red post box blue on North Street.

The Royal Mail declined to comment further on the matter but told a resident on social media they were not aware of the blue post box.

A tweet simply read: "We've heard nothing to confirm this is happening."

Similar post boxes have been seen in Southampton, Leeds and Nottingham.

These locations, along with Taunton, are hosting Cricket World Cup fixtures next month.

Residents theorised the post boxes are being painted blue in reference to the international tournament.

International Cricket Council has now confirmed this link - post boxes are being painted blue to commemorate the event.

An ICC spokesman said: "This is a joint activation between the Cricket World Cup 2019 and Royal Mail which will be officially launched next week."

The blue post box sparked a curious response in Taunton, as one person commented it "just needs a few stars" to reference a Pro-EU campaign.

One shopper said it "looks horrible" while another resident stated he "loved" the new paint job.
