Ahh... fish and chips.

There is, arguably, nothing more quintessentially British than this dish.

Freshly cooked battered fish (if you are lucky), big juicy chips, coated in salt, drizzled with vinegar, packed up in a box (the days of newspaper packaging are becoming a distant memory) and eaten at any time of the year. 'Tis a joy to behold.

So, when I heard about Bath Fish and Chips opening up on Terrace Walk in Bath, naturally I went there like a rat out of an aqueduct.

I brought my good friend and honorary dad of our four-person house, Andy, to review the place.

In my life, I have been called many things and one of those is 'frugal'.

Therefore, when I saw the menu, I thought the food on offer was quite pricey.

I had heard that in the last year or so there had been a cut in fishing quotas for cod and haddock and that had led to supplies falling and whole prices rising.

After seeing the prices lingering around the £10 mark for a large cod and chips, I thought it was, perhaps, on the more expensive side.

Undaunted, Andy chose a large cod and chips (£9.50) with curry sauce.

In an effort to seize the day, and all that carpe diem jazz, I went for the seafood basket.

This included two salt and pepper squid pieces, two panko squid rings, two butterfly prawns and two cod bites (£6.50).

After having a short wait, we tucked into the tasty-looking grub.

We agreed that the cod bites were fine but not particularly memorable but the other three were flavoursome and the battered coating complimented the seafood well.

It was, however, a much smaller dish than the large fish and chips, where, arguably, you got more value for money - just for pure size and a lack of chips.

A tasty meal but a small one at that.

Now, here's the verdict from the fish and chip correspondent, Andy.

The Seafood Basket, with squid, squid rings, prawns and cod bites

To synopsise his feedback, he said he had a good portion of chips, the batter was good, the curry sauce was decent and gave it an 8/10. I largely agreed and would give it a 7/10.

Again, he liked the batter on the seafood basket choices but it did look quite measly for the price of it.

He said he is very tempted to go there again for lunch and that he'd happily pay £4.50 for a jumbo battered sausage and regular chips.

In summary, Bath now has another tasty fish and chip establishment in its midst - albeit a slightly pricey one.

Also, I am not quite sure it is at the level of the award-winning Scallop Shell in Monmouth Place or Pollocks in Lower Bristol Road. But it is still very early days.

About Bath Fish and Chips:

The place opened to the public in mid-July.

It has replaced the old Gourmet Scoffs cafe, which closed in 2017, at number 9 Terrace Walk.

It is open seven-days-a-week and, at present, meals are only available for takeaway.

On Tuesdays, the business offers gluten-free options and there are vegetarian options, too.

The fish and chip shop sells classics such as cod, haddock, scampi, pies, chips and also whitebait, a seafood basket, halloumi fries, pea fritter and more.

Although it is just a takeaway at the moment, the business plans on opening an upstairs eating area in August.
