A specialised disabled toilet facility has opened at the Royal Bath and West Showground, near Shepton Mallet.

The facility has been opened by Changing Places, a national campaign which aims to see new public toilet facilities introduced across the country for people with acute physical and learning disabilities.

It will be managed by The Royal Bath and West Society.

Paul Hooper from The Royal Bath and West Society, said: “The society is keen to provide Up-to-date facilities for the visitors to the showground and is pleased that we are able to provide this facility for general community use.”

The council contributed £6,000 on the basis that as well as the facility being available during events at the showground, the facility will open longer hours so users can ‘drop-by’ at other times.

The facility will be available at events and open to people passing the main entrance gates between 7am and 7pm, 364 days a year.

The facility at the Bath and West is the third to be opened in Mendip, joining facilities in Frome and Wells.

District councillor Philip Ham said: “Being a rural district it’s important that we also think about residents and visitors who are out enjoying our beautiful countryside and attending events.

“Having a facility located at the entrance of the Bath and West Showground site means that we are not only helping to support facilities in our town centres, but across our district, with access available during events at other times.”
