A student in Bath has hit out at the local council for what she calls a "shortage" of toilet facilities in the city.

Chloe Winters, of Milton Avenue, wrote to Bath Live and the Bath Chronicle to express her dismay at the "disappearance" of public toilets in the city.

She said it was leading to those on nights out in Bath to succumb to "desperation" and that there was no one to enforce wrongdoing.

Chloe also took the view that the council - as a land owner with a property portfolio worth £500 million - could do more to help people worried about getting caught short.

The recent rise in car parking charges also had not escaped her notice.

Student's letter in full

"I speak as a student from Bath University and although Bath isn’t my home town I feel privileged to study here.

"May I though make a plea to Bath council of a glaring incompetence, in short (no pun intended) a shortage, no disappearance, of public toilets.

"Why should the council with all of their wealth expect local shops, restaurants, pubs etc to have endless queues in their establishments in order to provide a service that the council does not - toilets!

"We students enjoy with hundreds of inhabitants and tourists joyous weekends and if the councillors would care to join in the vibrant night life they could witness the desperation of those choosing to use doorways etc to urinate (and more) due to there being no public conveniences.

"No police of course to witness this as to see police presence in the town is on a par to seeing a dodo.

"Massive car parking charges and massive business rates - where is this money being used?

"I may be only 19 years old but with ambitions to have a career in politics, and hopefully if and when I graduate in two years and if I am fortunate to remain in Bath, I will do my utmost to benefit this city, not destroy its amazing shops and surroundings."

What did the council say?

Bath and North East Somerset Council did not respond to Bath Live's request for comment on the student's passionate letter.
