Travellers have set up camp in a quiet suburb in Yeovil.

Multiple caravans, cars and other vehicles pitched up on a grass bank at Century Park, alongside the Leonardo airfield, yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, May 20).

Century Park lies in a quiet residential area of the town, near Preston Road, and is a popular walking and cycling route, especially so at the present time amid the coronavirus lockdown.

It is the second prominent traveller encampment in the town in the space of two months, after a group set up camp on land opposite Palmers Fish and Chips on Bunford Lane in March.

One resident, who asked not to be named, described seeing the travellers as he arrived home from work yesterday.

He said: "I drove down Watercombe Lane and saw them all parked and stood on the bank up by the fence.

"It seemed like maybe one or two families were there. They just looked like they were keeping themselves to themselves and enjoying the sun as I went past."

A spokesman for South Somerset District Council said: "We’re due to make a site visit this morning after receiving notification of an encampment and will ascertain whether they are located on our land.

"We’ll look to obtain personal details and assess the next steps depending on land ownership."
