The lead pilot of the Red Arrows said the British summer weather got the better of the elite squad leading it to cut short a display on the Somerset coast.

The iconic flying squad - officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team - arrived in the skies above Weston-super-Mare yesterday afternoon (June 23) to perform for the huge crowds gathered below.

However, the show was stopped after just five minutes in after it was decided the weather made it unsafe for the pilots to continue.

Although the thunderstorms forecast had failed to materialise, heavy cloud cover and rain made it a potentially dangerous flight for the aces.

Team leader Martin Pert said on Twitter: "We gave it our best shot at Weston Air Festival but I'm afraid the British summer weather got the best of us yet again.

"Horizons completely disappeared and it was unsafe to continue."

Supervisor Adam Collins, who goes by the name 'Red 10' online, added: "A pleasure to be at Weston again! Unfortunately, despite our best efforts the weather didn't play ball.

"We aim to fly a dynamic and memorable show but, above all safety is our prime concern."

Despite the briefness of the display most were pleased to catch a glimpse of the Red Arrows.

Tim Lloyd said: "Thanks for giving it a crack boys, in dreadful conditions.

"See you at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2019."

Amanda Jane Wheatley added: "Thank you for the short but sweet display at Weston. You can't help the weather.

"I was excited to see you anyway.

"Kudos to you guys for trying your best but we understand that your safety must always come first."

Crowds basked in glorious sunshine during the first day of the festival in Saturday but the weather also affected a balloon ascent from the beach.

Thousands of people visited the seaside town to watch the displays and wander among the tents and Armed Forces celebrations.
