Weston-super-Mare's beach is a firm favourite for the people of Birmingham.

Many Brummies were on the beach today (Friday, August 7) enjoying a dip in the water to cool off from high temperatures.

It's well known that Midlands folk love nothing better than a trip to Weston's famous seaside.

But why is it their summer destination of choice?

We spoke to those enjoying Weston's golden sands to find out.

'For us this is the closest seaside'

A few tourists from Birmingham said they chose Weston-super-Mare because of its wide sandy beach and because of the short travel distance.

Other sun seekers from Surrey, Cumbria, South Wales and Andover had all made the trip too.

Today in Weston-super-Mare the temperature had been forecast to peak at 25 degrees Celsius at around 2pm - so it was no surprise visitors flocked in to enjoy scorching rays.

A key reason Weston is known as the "go-to" beach for Brummies is because it isn't too far away.

One family who were visiting from Birmingham said they chose Weston-super-Mare's beach over Brean.

Matthew Appleby, 32 and Helen Swallow, 28 were at the beach today with their two children.

Matthew said: "For us this is the closest seaside.

"We were thinking about Brean but this one has got more to do around it and is nicer.

"It is better for the children as well."

The family added they were looking forward to their fish and chips to round off the day.

'We used to come when I was younger'

Luke and Maddie, both aged 22, were also on the beach from Birmingham.

The couple, who did not wish for their full names to be reported, said they had come down for a couple of days and were staying nearby.

For Maddie, Weston is a place of nostalgia, as well as relative convenience.

Maddie said: "Its been really good here, we used to come when I was younger."

She went on to say the journey time for them was only an hour and a half.

When asked why they chose Weston-super-Mare they said the short journey time made it an easy pick.

Maddie added: "There is also lots to do around here."

Birmingham to Weston - a Brummie tradition?

Michelle and Sasha, 34 and 23 respectively, had also made the trip down to Weston from Birmingham.

The pair, who did not wish to be fully identified, said their families had "always come" to Weston-super-Mare and they were carrying on the tradition.

In Somerset Live's Facebook Live video visiting Weston-super-Mare beach, one lady from Birmingham said she felt safe while on the beach because people were giving each other plenty of space.

In a world still living with coronavirus it is not surprising that one thing some people are looking for from their seaside trips is space - big beaches, where social distancing could be possible.

'We haven't been here for over 40 years'

David and Pamela Stokes had made the trip down from Morecambe near Cumbria

Brummies weren't the only people who had travelled a big distance to visit Weston beach today.

David and Pamela Stokes, 69 and 71 respectively, had made the trip down from Morecambe - like Weston a seaside town - on the Lancashire coast.

The couple had come down on a camping trip joined by their extended family and grandchildren.

They were staying at Mill Farm camp site in Bridgwater and said they had enjoyed eating out at a local pub.

Another effect of the coronavirus crisis might be people like David and Pamela rediscovering British destinations, when previously they might have headed abroad.

They said this was the first time they had come to Weston-super-Mare in over 40 years.

Pamela said: "We have thoroughly enjoyed it and we were just agreeing to come back next year.

"We haven't been here for over 40 years."

The couple added that they felt quite safe on the beach from coronavirus as they were being socially distanced.

'I've been coming here for 72 years'

While Weston-super-Mare does see a lot of tourists in the summer months, it is still visited by many who are more local than Birmingham.

Dave Parsons, 71, and Sue Crokely, 72 are from Bristol and they said they "love" coming to the beach in the good weather.

Sue said: "I've been coming here for 72 years.

"The thing about Weston is that it's got a nice clean beach, beautiful promenade - they've really done that up and it's great to see.

"And not to mention the fish and chips!"

High temperatures are expected in Weston-super-Mare into the early part of next week as a heat wave continues to hit the South of England.
