A 90 year-old woman was rescued from a fire in a tower block in Bridgwater today (May 7).

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called out to the 10-story Westfield Flats on West Street in Bridgwater at 10.11am this morning.

They found there was a fire in a flat and a person reported missing on the eighth floor of the building.

Firefighters got to work on what turned out to be a kitchen fire and rescued a 90 year-old woman from inside the apartment.

The pensioner was suffering from smoke inhalation and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident report says: “Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call from an alarm monitoring company informing us of a fire alarm activation in Westfield Flats, Bridgwater.

“One fire appliance from Bridgwater was immediately mobilised by fire control.

“On arrival the incident commander confirmed that there was a fire in a flat with persons reported missing on the 8th floor of the building and immediately requested the attendance of further appliances from Bridgwater and Taunton along with an aerial ladder platform from Taunton which were immediately mobilised by fire control.

“Crews got to work to extinguish the fire found to be in the kitchen, using four breathing apparatus and two main jets.

“A 90 year-old female was rescued from the property by firefighters, suffering smoke inhalation. An ambulance was requested and the casualty was taken to hospital for further treatment.

“The fire caused approximately 80 percent smoke damage to the flat and 20 percent fire damage to the kitchen.”
