A Yeovil mum who was out drinking in Yeovil town centre was spotted by CCTV operators getting behind the wheel of her car.

They informed the police that Stephanie Tanner was a suspected drink driver after seeing her come out of Wetherspoons.

When she was pulled over not only did she fail a breath test but was found to have no insurance, Somerset Magistrates were told.

Tanner, 24, of Shadwell Lane, Wincanton, pleaded guilty to driving a Vauxhall Corsa at The Park in Yeovil on July 21 after consuming excess alcohol.

She also admitted using a vehicle without insurance when she appeared in the dock at Yeovil.

Appearing unrepresented, Tanner told the court that she had gone out and had too much to drink and didn't know what she was doing.

Emma Lenanton, prosecuting, said that the police were tipped off at 1.15am that the defendant had been seen coming out of the pub and getting into her car.

"Officers found the vehicle driving towards Reckleford so followed it and illuminated their blue lights and stopped it in The Park," she said.

"Tanner confirmed her identity and then failed a roadside breath test and said 'I will admit it, I have not eaten so I am probably over the limit'"

She was taken to Yeovil police station where a further breath test revealed a reading of 51mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mcg of alcohol.

Subsequent enquiries also revealed that she was not insured to drive the car either.

Appearing unrepresented, Tanner told the court that she had gone out and had too much to drink and didn't know what she was doing.

"I regretted it straight away and need my car and license so I can go out to work," she said.

"I had a bit of a heated row with my partner that night and just wanted to go home and didn't really think about what I was doing.

"I also could not afford to put the insurance on my car because I was in a lot of debt."

The magistrates imposed a 14-month disqualification on Tanner and fined her £120 for drink driving.

They made no separate penalty for the insurance offence but ordered her to pay £40 towards costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
