Key routes for Somerset commuters have been cancelled after a rail union announced five straight days of strikes.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) hit out at operator South Western Railway in the long-running dispute over planned changes to having a guard on every train.

From Tuesday, June 18, drivers and guards will walk out, resulting in cancellations and reduced services across the network.

Services will not run between Yeovil Junction and Westbury via Frome for the duration of the strike, which is due to last until and including Saturday, June 22.

No trains will run on the Bristol Temple Meads to Salisbury route either.

Salisbury to London Waterloo will run on a reduced timetable. This route includes stations at Sherborne, Crewkerne and Axminster.

Would-be passengers have been told to use Great Western Railway trains at no extra cost instead.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Our members have been left with no choice but to go ahead with strike action tomorrow.

“They are angry and frustrated that despite suspending action in good faith, and entering into talks in a positive and constructive manner, South Western Railway have dragged their heels and failed to bolt down an agreement that matches up to our expectations on the guard guarantee.

“Worse than that, the company have refused to give assurances on the future operational role of the guard fuelling fears amongst our members of a stitch up.

South Western Railway services link Bath, Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster as well as Yeovil to London

“That situation has been compounded by an insistence that future operational models will be governed by the protection of company profits and not the safety of the travelling public.

“For more than three months we have sought to negotiate a conclusion to this dispute and it is wholly down to the management side that the core issue of the safety critical competencies and the role of the guard has not been signed off.

“It is because of that crucial failure by SWR that we have had no option but to lift the suspension and move back into strike action.”

The strikes also mean there will be a reduced service from Exeter St Davids and Salisbury.

South Western Railway said: "A reduced train service will run between Salisbury and Exeter St David's with trains starting later and finishing earlier than usual.

"Trains will not stop at Feniton, Whimple, Cranbrook, Pinhoe, or Exeter St Davids.
