Drivers have been warned to "approach with care" as the next wave of traffic lights are switched on at Yeovil's Western Corridor.

At 4pm today (May 22) a Somerset County Council spokesman confirmed that 46 sets of traffic lights were in the process of being switched on.

36 traffic lights will be switched on at Preston Road Roundabout, as well as 10 more at the nearby Asda junction.

The council spokesman said: "The newly-signalised Preston Road Roundabout and Asda junction are in the process of being switched on.

"Please approach with care over the next few days - we'll be monitoring and optimising the settings."

All 145 traffic lights along the main two-mile stretch of the Western Corridor project should now be operational.

Somerset County Council has promised the whole project will be officially finished in June, several months after its original completion date, as some small finishing work is still to be done at Western Avenue, Lufton Way and Abbey Manor.

A spokesman for the council said traffic flow in the area will be improved once the project is completed.

They said: "This is another major step forward in this very important scheme which will improve traffic flow and unlock land for development.

“As with the other junctions in the Western Corridor, the switch-on is the start of the process, not the end of it, and it will take a few days for us to optimise the settings. We’ll have operatives on site monitoring and adjusting the signals to ensure they are working effectively.

"The next step will be for the two new junctions to be synced together and joined up with other signalised junctions on the Western Corridor to improve overall traffic flow along this increasingly busy route.

"The new traffic signals will allow queues to be balanced to reduce overall average waiting times at peak times and help the junction cope with expected growth in the future."

The Asda junction was converted to a mini-roundabout for the duration of the Western Corridor roadworks, but this was only a temporary measure, and the junction will now be returned to a signal-operated junction.

The council spokesman added: "The Western Corridor scheme remains on track for completion in June with contractors Alun Griffiths working hard on the remaining sections.

"These include the toucan crossings on Western Avenue and Lufton Way, the Abbey Manor cycleway and other finishing works such as landscaping."

Drainage and white lining works will be taking place on the Western Relief Road for four nights from Tuesday, May 28, with the road closed in both directions between the Lysander Road junction and Westlands throughabout between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

Access will be maintained for cyclists and pedestrians with a signed diversion in place for vehicles along Preston Road.
