Jeff Williams has joined a new club in France.

The ex-Bath Rugby winger has gone up a league from Stade Rodez Aveyron in Federale 1 to Béziers in Pro D2, the second tier of rugby across The Channel.

The 30-year-old said: "For me, it has always been a goal to become a professional player in France. In fact, the first match I went to as a spectator in France was a friendly match involving Béziers so, for me, the circle is complete.

"Pro D2 is a very tough competition and I am very excited to play in it. There are lots of good players in the division and I look forward to this challenge."

Coach David Aucagne said: "We were waiting for someone like Jeff to bring us experience and confidence, so I am very happy that he is joining us.

"He is a charming person and will be important in mentoring the young players in our squad."

South African-born Williams played semi-pro for French club RC Châteaurenard in 2011-2012 before his dad emailed the RFU letting them know he was eligible for England; asking for a 7s trial.

It got the foot in the door and after several trials, meetings and lots of hard work, Williams ended up representing the Red Rose for four years in the HSBC Sevens World Series.

He was brought to Bath by Mike Ford for the start of the 2016 season on a one-year deal and earned two contract extensions.

He was released last Summer and played in some invitational 7s tournaments while keeping fit, then moved to Stade Rodez Aveyron.

Next season he will play against one of his old Bath team-mates Kane Palma-Newport, who is at Colomiers.
