The opening of Bridgwater's newest Aldi is to be delayed, the supermarket has confirmed.

The new store is being built next to Northgate Primary School and its sports facilities as part of the site's multi-million regeneration.

Plans approved in late 2018 by Sedgemoor District Council show a large grey Aldi will be constructed along with a large car park with spaces for bicycles and motorcycles.

A supermarket spokesman previously said its interior will be different to the existing branch on Eastover and will feature "simple layouts and brighter, wider aisles".

Contractors commenced work on the site in December 2019 but the outbreak of COVID-19 has halted any construction.

The supermarket previously targeted a Summer opening but the pandemic has caused Aldi to push forward its opening to Autumn.

A spokeswoman for Aldi said: "Construction for our new Bridgwater store is now progressing as we move towards opening in Autumn."

The news comes as the government has "encouraged" workers who cannot work from home, including those in construction, to return to their workplaces.

A spokesman previously said in January 2019 that Aldi is "excited" to open a new supermarket in Bridgwater.

He said: "We are looking forward to opening a new bigger store in Bridgwater, and will begin construction later this year.

"The store will be in our new layout, which ensures more in store space for fresh, chilled and food-to-go ranges, as well as simpler layouts and brighter, wider aisles."

Aldi aims to close the existing Eastover store the day before the new store's opening day and existing staff will migrate across to the new supermarket.
