A MAN has been arrested and is in custody following an assault in the early hours of the morning in Newport city centre.

Another man was injured in the incident, which took place in the High Street area, at the Old Green Crossing at about 4am.

The area was cordoned off following the incident.

The cordon has now been removed and the area has been re-opened to the public.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "We are investigating an assault that occurred in the area of High Street, Newport approximately 4am Saturday, August 17.

"As a result of this incident a male received injuries and another male was arrested and is in police custody.

"Gwent police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this investigation.

"If you have any information regarding this incident then please call us on 101 or through our social media desk, quoting incident number 92 17/08/2019."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called on Saturday, August 17 at approximately 4.20am to the Police reporting on a person needing medical assistance in central Newport.

"We responded with two emergency ambulances and one patient was transported to Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.”
