THE Checkatrade Trophy may not be the top priority for Newport County AFC but goalkeeper Joe Day insists the Exiles will be going all out for victory against Chelsea under-21s tonight.

County bounced back from last week’s 6-0 home defeat to Yeovil Town with an impressive 1-0 win at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

And they will be determined to give the home fans something to shout about at Rodney Parade this evening.

Day told iFollow Exiles: "Whatever team the manager chooses will go out to try and win because it’s a game we need a positive result from, especially after the defeat in the competition previously.”

A much-changed Exiles XI, featuring Nick Townsend in goal, were beaten 1-0 at Swindon Town in their first Checkatrade tie two weeks ago.

“Every game has to be looked at as an individual game and we always try to set up to win each game so whoever the manager picks will be doing that.

“It’s a tricky one because it’s not the usual opposition you are used to playing in League Two.

“League Two can be physical at times, whereas I’m sure Chelsea under-21s will come with technical attributes, fitness, pace, power – all the things that come with Premier League players really.

"I don’t think we can change too much how we want to play because we have to do what we do best, and we just have to try to win the game at Rodney Parade."

Day was happy to get the win for the 298 fans who made the trip to Merseyside at the weekend.

"We could hear the supporters from the first minute until the last,” he added. “I think they out-sung the home fans who were also in large numbers.

“They are massive for us especially when we come away and we’re trying to hold on for the win.

“Their voice helps get us over the line and it carries us on. The fans have been right behind us all season and we were all disappointed to let them down so badly last week.

“With three home games coming up we want to put in performances to make up for last week and hopefully this result helps as well."
