The chimes of a well-known Lichfield clock are set to fall silent as work is to make it fit for the future is carried out.

Experts from Smiths of Derby will be removing the hammers which strike the Friary Clock Tower bell as part of a refurbishment project.

The chimes won't be away for long though, as the work is due to be completed by the end of the month.

Lichfield City Council shared news of the refurbishment on social media site Twitter.

In a tweet they wrote: "The Friary Clock Tower is set to fall silent over the next few weeks as its familiar chimes will cease.

"Clock experts, Smiths of Derby will be removing the hammers, which strike the bells, for refurbishment.

"It is hoped that they will be reinstated by the end of March."

The tower was erected in 1863 at the junction of Bird Street and Bore Street over the site of the ancient Crucifix Conduit which supplied water to the Friary since 1301.
