It’s the news that every ticket-holder was dreading — Glastonbury has been cancelled.

The Worthy Farm festival was gearing up to host its 50th anniversary edition this June, with Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar among the acts set to perform.

However, due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the festival has been called off, with 2020 now resigned to being an “enforced fallow year”, according to co-organisers Emily and Michael Eavis.

More than 200,000 people were set to descend on the “city in a field” for the festival, and 135,000 of them had already paid their £50 deposit, with plans to transfer the full balance in the first week of April.

Many are now wondering where this leaves them with regards to refunds, as well as tickets for the 2021 edition.

This is everything you need to know.

Why was Glastonbury 2020 cancelled?

In a statement posted on Wednesday morning, organisers said: "We very much hope that the situation in the UK will have improved enormously by the end of June.

“But even if it has, we are no longer able to spend the next three months with thousands of crew here on the farm, helping us with the enormous job of building the infrastructure and attractions needed to welcome more than 200,000 people to a temporary city in these fields."

It means that Worthy Farm will stay empty this summer, much like it did in 2018, when the organisers enacted a “fallow year” in order for the surrounding environment to recover.

Can I get a refund on my deposit?

Yes. Organisers have confirmed that anyone who requires a refund on their £50 deposit will “be able to contact See Tickets in the coming days in order to secure that.”

Will my deposit still be valid for buying tickets in 2021?

It’s notoriously difficult to get tickets for Glastonbury, with the initial batch selling out entirely in little over half an hour last year.

However, anyone who had already paid their £50 deposit for 2020 will be automatically guaranteed the chance to buy a ticket in 2021, unless they want a refund now.

Organisers added: “Further information — including details on rolling over coach packages, official accommodation bookings and local Sunday tickets — will be added to our website in the coming days.”
