D-Day veterans’ homecoming trip to Portsmouth has been diverted because of bad weather conditions caused by Storm Miguel.

The MV Boudicca was due to return on Saturday night following the D-Day commemorations in France.

But the vessel was forced to change course because of choppy seas caused by Storm Miguel battering Spain and the coast of western France.

An official welcome home party with fireworks had been planned for around 250 Second World War heroes aboard.

Now well-wishers are being urged to go to Dover to greet the veterans.

The Royal British Legion is now calling on people to to greet their arrival at around 9pm on Saturday.

The charity tweeted: "The D-Day veterans on board the MV Boudicca have been diverted from Portsmouth to Dover due to adverse weather conditions and will now arrive at 9pm this evening.

"Please come down to Dover to show your support and give our heroes the welcome home they deserve."

It is believed some of the veterans will leave the ship on Saturday night, with the majority disembarking on Sunday.
