BBC newsreader Kate Silverton said sorry to her Twitter followers after she accidentally retweeted a post spoiling the Strictly Come Dancing result ahead of Sunday’s announcement.

The broadcaster, 49, shared a post which revealed that Dev Griffin and Dianne Buswell had become the third couple to leave the competition before the news was officially revealed in the BBC results show.

“How was dev been kicked off??” the tweet asked. “He was literally 2nd on the leaderboard last week and 3rd over all last week? And because of one ‘bad’ dance he’s gone?”

After her followers informed her of the mistake, Silverton posted an apology on Twitter for the “entirely unintentional ‘retweet.’”

“Oh my goodness - I have spent the day with my family offline & and just catching up with this - as someone who clearly knows all too well the fundamental issue around #stricrlyspoilers [sic] I hand on heart can say this was an entirely unintentional ‘retweet,’” she wrote.

She added that she had been streaming the show on catch up in the early hours of the morning “with tired eyes” and said sorry for ruining the “wonderful magic” of Strictly.

“I was watching with my mum on catch up - last midnight so with tired eyes,” Silverton wrote.

“I certainly don’t retweet anything like this as my followers will know but for anyone who has had their wonderful @bbcstrictly magic ruined I must apologise & again pls [sic] accept as entirely unintentional.”

Silverton competed on Strictly last year with professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec, reaching the ninth week of the competition before losing the dance off to Graeme Swann and Oti Mabuse in Blackpool.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday, October 19 at 6.40pm on BBC One.
