Manchester Originals: Hundred name revealed for team based at Old Trafford

The proposed name for the team based at Old Trafford in The Hundred is Manchester Originals.

Standard Sport revealed last month that the ECB had applied for trademarks for six of the eight teams in the new competition to be launched next summer, including London Spirit (Lord’s) and Welsh Fire (Cardiff).

The competition has caused division in English cricket but is the governing body's aim to grow the game in this country. That leaves the Kia Oval as the only ground without a proposed name for its team. There is something of an impasse between Surrey and Kent, the counties involved with the team, and the ECB.

The governing body presented four names to the two counties, all with London as the locator, and they offered no view on the four because they would like the name to include the ground’s name or at least acknowledge their history. However, the name of Trent Rockets (Nottingham) has increased their belief that their name need not include London. In an interview with Standard Sport this week, The Hundred’s Managing Director, Sanjay Patel, said there “had been a major process” to design the teams’ identity, look and tone”. They will not be announced until shortly before the inaugural draft in October.

It is understood that the research in Manchester revealed a passion for the city’s famous culture of sports, arts, music and industry.

There has been no trademark application for Manchester Originals yet.

The status of five of the six trademarks for the proposed names changed this morning to “Application Published” on the Intellectual Property Office website. Only Leeds Superchargers remains “Examination”.
