Prosecutors charged on Monday a 36-year-old Honolulu man with attempted first-degree assault for attacking a law enforcement officer with a screwdriver and first-degree attempted theft of a firearm.

Police arrested Remington Troy Guyton on Sunday on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, but the charge was later reclassified after conferring with prosecutors.

According to a court document supporting his arrest, police were called to 1580 Kapiolani Boulevard, where Guyton was allegedly punching people.

A uniformed officer stopped Guyton, who was 10 to 12 feet away from his patrol car, then dropped his bags and shouted, “You’re going to have to kill me, while brandishing a black Philips screwdriver.

Guyton then allegedly charged the officer, struck him on his right cheek just above his neck with the screwdriver and caused a puncture wound, police said in a court document.

He also allegedly punched him in the left eye, lip and mouth.

Guyton then reached for the officer’s department-issued Glock 17 pistol in his holster, but couldn’t remove the gun from the holster.

The officer took Guyton down to the ground and another man helped detain him until other officers arrived.

Guyton is being held on $50,000 bail while he awaits a preliminary hearing.
