Wilmington Area Woodturners launches programs

Compiled by Cheryl Whitaker StarNews Staff

SOUTHEASTERN NC -- Recently the Wilmington Area Woodturners Association (WAWA) and Brunswick County Community College (BCC) Southport Center, have been working together to launch a continuing education woodturning program. This collaboration will bring another layer of creativity and artistry to the citizens of Southport and surrounding Brunswick County.

At the time this project was launched in 2017 WAWA had in place turn key adult and youth continuing education programs with Cape Fear Community College. It was a logical step to offer a similar program in another county/location.

Woodturning will be an extension of the already successful Heritage Arts Program housed at the Southport Center due to the expansion of an additional 9000 square feet that is being renovated. WAWA has donated 10 mini Jet lathes, valued at $2,500 to the school to help seed the Southport Center woodturning program. The donation was made possible by a generous 2018 grant from the Landfall Foundation, enabling WAWA to upgrade their educational lathe equipment to the midi size with the understanding that their existing equipment would get a new useful home.

WAWA will have featured demonstrators at the May 3 Art Show in the Southport Center. They will continue their involvement with this project, leading and coordinating basic woodturning instruction for the first couple of classes in the Southport Center.

Contact Barbara McFall, director Southport Center, for more information regarding class start-up and registration. For more information about the Wilmington Area Woodturning Association visit http://www.wilmingtonareawoodturnersassociation.org/ or contact Graham Webster at 910-859-7012.
