SHALLOTTE — A West Brunswick High School graduate who wrestled and played football for the Trojans died in a shooting Friday night in Shallotte.

Jimmy Carraway, the former West Brunswick wrestling coach, confirmed with the StarNews that Jacary Bethel was killed Friday night. The Shallotte Police Department confirmed it took place at the Cardinal Pointe Apartments, but would not release any other information until the investigation concludes.

"He will be truly missed," Carraway said. "I loved him like a son. He was one of the greatest kids I've ever had the privilege of coaching. Anything he said he would do, he did. He was polite, he loved his friends and his family and was a special kid. It's just a tragedy."

No one has been placed in custody as of Saturday morning.

Bethel graduated in 2018 and was a standout on the West Brunswick wrestling team while playing linebacker for the football team. During his senior year, Bethel went undefeated during the wrestling regular season and won the Mideastern Conference Championship at the 170-pound weight class.

The West Brunswick official sports Twitter account released a post in Bethel's honor Saturday morning.

"Heartbroken at the news of a life taken too soon last night," the tweet said. "Sending lots of prayers and love to Jacary's family, friends, and all of our community who are suffering from this tragedy."
