WILMINGTON -- Maisie Boren, an Isaac Bear high school student, was awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship for 2018-19 by the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Maisie studied Russian in Moscow, Russia this summer.

Maisie, competitively selected out of over 3,300 applications from across the United States, was one of approximately 670 students who studied or will study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Indonesian or Russian overseas this coming year. While in Russia, Maisie received formal language instruction, lived with a host family, and experienced the local culture as part of an immersion environment.

Maisie has previously received scholarships from the Cosmosphere (June 2019), All American Aviation (Fall 2018), the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (June 2018), and Space Camp (June 2016). She has been flying since she was twelve and is currently working on her pilot’s license. She is a straight-A student, a volunteer at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and a 2nd Lieutenant in Civil Air Patrol.

The NSLI-Y program is part of a multi-agency U.S. Government initiative launched in 2006 to improve Americans' ability to communicate in select critical languages to advance international dialogue and increase American economic global competitiveness.
