American Legion - Walk of Remembrance

WILMINGTON -- The American Legion was founded in March 1919 after World War I by a group of Veterans, under the leadership of Teddy Roosevelt Jr. With that said, Congress issued a Charter to the Legion on March 16, 1919. Post 10 is one of the oldest Post in the United States, having been founded less than six months later on Sep. 3, 1919.

The Post will celebrate its 100th anniversary the weekend of September 20, with dinners, music and dances. Also a Walk of Remembrance event, which will consist of laser cut bricks honoring American’s Veterans. The bricks cost $50 each and will lay in the Walk of Remembrance for as long as the Post building exists.

The program is open to all Veterans in the Wilmington Area. Families of deceased Veterans are welcome to participate in this program.  Forms can be picked up in the lobby or canteen at Post 10, located at 702 Pine Grove Drive.  Information is also available on the Post web site, alpost10nc.org. The application form can be printed and mailed in.

Kiwanis Club of Wilmington

WILMINGTON — The Kiwanis Club of Wilmington will meet at noon Aug. 28 at the First Baptist Church Activity Center, 1939 Independence Blvd. The speaker will be Beth Wood, North Carolina State Auditor.

Maulers Car Club show Oct. 12

WILMINGTON -- The Maulers Car Club presents the 2019 Port City Rumble, noon-8 p.m. Oct. 12 at Waterline Brewing Company, 721 Surry St. Car show open to pre 1969 Hot rods, kustoms, classics, and motorcycles. Registration 9:30-11:30 a.m. $15 entry fee for cars and bikes. $40 vendor spaces available. There will be live music with The Tremors, American Speedway, and The Speed Kings. Remembering Our Heroes

WILMINGTON -- The Remembering Our Heroes Organization of Wilmington will meet 10-11 a.m. Aug. 28 at the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center, 2222 S. College Road. Refreshments served at 9:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be John J. Munn, Ltcol, USMC (retired). He will speak on "USS North Carolina Design Evolution and History." Munn will discuss the application of Naval Technology specifically as it applied to the Battleship USS North Carolina BB-55 and the impact of external influences like the Naval Treaties of 1922 and 1930, its anticipated treat’s (Nagano class Japanese BB) influence on armor protection and weapons systems, and the ship’s mission and weapon suite evolution as WWII Pacific sea warfare moved to a predominantly air war. While covering some technical issues, it is not designed as a detailed technical discussion. Munn is a 1967 graduate of The Citadel with a Civil Engineering degree and served for 21 years as a U.S. Marine Corps Combat Engineer and Motor Transport Officer. He moved to Wilmington in 2006 and started volunteering on the Battleship North Carolina Memorial in 2015 initially focusing on the ship’s Marine Detachment and then supporting the volunteer maintenance efforts. Munn qualified as a Battleship Docent and Tour Guide in 2017.

Tidewater Camellia Club sale Nov. 23

WILMINGTON -- The Tidewater Camellia Club will present its "Fall Celebration and Sale" 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 23 at the New Hanover County Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive. 

A camellia show featuring members' camellia blooms will begin at 10 a.m. Nonmember camellia blooms are also welcome for exhibition. Camellia plants will be available for sale. A limited number of "Tidewater Select" camellia plants - rare cultivars selected from award winning camellia garden, and grown by club members  will be featured. Talk with experts; attend educational seminars about the planting and care of camellias. Guided tours of the Arboretum Camellia Garden will also be available.

VFW Post 8866 Fish Fry

SUPPLY -- The VFW Post 8866, Holden Beach, will hold a fish fry, 5-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the post, 573 Sabbath Home Road. The menu consist of fish, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, dessert and iced tea. Plates are $10 each. The canteen will also be open. For more information, call 910-842-5535.

Vietnam Veterans of America

SOUTHEASTERN, N.C. -- Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 885, Wilmington, will hold a fundraiser at 9 a.m. Aug. 24 at Piggly Wiggly, 112 Village Road, N.E., Leland. The Chapter will also hold its golf tournament on Sept. 11 at Compass Pointe, Leland. There will be a brief memorial service recognizing the importance and the loss of American lives on 9/11. It will be followed by a light breakfast, a day full of golf, a noon luncheon for all who participate. Sponsorships and player foursomes are still available.
