HS Roundup: South Brunswick boys squeak past Ashley

BOYS BASKETBALL

Coastal Christian 55, Carolina Day 35

Skylar Davies notched a game-high 18 points in the Centurions' victory.

Keshaun Pierce and Chazz Banks each added 11. Kamron Greene notched four assists. 

Coastal Christian (7-4) next plays at the Winter Classic at Mt. Olive on Dec. 26.

Durham Academy 59, Cape Fear Academy 44

The Hurricanes took their first defeat on Friday.

Cape Fear Academy (11-1) was led by Ivan Misic's 18 points. Next for the Hurricanes is a Dec. 20 game in the Greenfield Christmas Tournament against Neuse Christian Academy.

South Brunswick 56, Ashley 52

Jace McKenney led all scorers with 24 points and lifted the Cougars (3-2, 1-0) to a victory over the Screaming Eagles (0-4, 0-1) in both teams’ opening game in the Mideastern Conference.

South Brunswick gained some distance with a 20-9 win in the second quarter. From there, the Cougars held on and staved off an Ashley rally.

AJ Rossi had 10 points for the Cougars. Mikai Stanley led the Screaming Eagles with 15.

Hoggard 76, North Brunswick 40

The Vikings (3-2, 1-0 Mideastern) scored 47 points in the middle periods and cruised past the Scorpions (4-4, 0-1) Friday.

Sabastian Haidera led Hoggard with 19 points, while Cameron Blanks had 13 and Trey Clucas chipped in 12.

North Brunswick’s leading scorer was Travis Lowe, who had 11 points.

New Hanover 63, Topsail 48

Four Wildcats reached double figures as New Hanover (2-1, 1-0) opened play in the Mideastern Conference with a convincing win over the Pirates (4-3, 0-1).

Jalen Anderson led the Wildcats with 17, and freshman Maleec Myers had 13. Jameric McDonald and Demerion Barnett each had 10 points for New Hanover.

Trask 92, Wilmington Christian Academy 64

Ivey Batts scored 21 points and Will Berry had 15 as the Titans (3-4) cruised past the Patriots.

Trask made 11 three-pointers in the win and only committed four turnovers. MP Dzurovcin had 11 rebounds for the Titans.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wilmington Christian Academy 56, Trask 55

Lydia Bradshaw notched 21 points and Kyra Rickard 21 rebounds to help the Patriots clip the Titans.

Sophia Kee (11 rebounds) and Sydney Davneport (10) were also double-digit rebounders. Caroline Leggett pout in 18 points.

Wilmington Christian (9-1) is set for a rematch with Trask on Dec. 27.

Hoggard 65, North Brunswick 35

Blair Barefoot finished with 23 points as the Vikings claimed the Mideastern Conference victory.

Icess Tresvik added 12 and six rebounds. Grace Howell posted five assists and Madeline Elgart seven rebounds.

Hoggard (4-3, 1-0 Mideastern) hosts Topsail on Tuesday while the Scorpions (4-5, 0-1) go to Laney on Tuesday.

Topsail 46, New Hanover 41

The Pirates (7-1, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead and huifuJng on down the stretch for a big Mideastern Conference win over the Wildcats.

Julia Sullivan led Topsail with 14 points, and Payton Little chipped in 10. New Hanover's Andreyah Shuford was the game's top-scorer with 23.

New Hanover hosts South Brunswick on Tuesday, while Topsail will be at Hoggard.

Ashley 47, South Brunswick 36

A 22-14 advantage in the first quarter for the Screaming Eagles (4-1, 1-0 Mideastern) was good enough to propel Ashley to a victory over the Cougars (3-4, 0-1).

Laney 53, West Brunswick 28

Saniya Rivers scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the first half and the Buccaneers (5-1, 1-0 Mideastern) had no problems in a comfortable win over the Trojans (0-7, 0-1).

Gracie Elmore led West Brunswick with nine points, and Morgan Adam chipped in 10 for Laney.
