Weston McKennie has extended his deal with Schalke through 2024.

Earlier this year there were reports linking McKennie to the Premier League. Also, Schalke’s financial struggles have been looked at as a possible reason why they would want to cash in on the 20-year-old. However, McKennie has pledged the foreseeable future to the club that gave him his professional start. He had this to say:

Last season’s Bundesliga campain was nothing short of forgettable for Schalke as they narrowly avoided relegation after finishing in second place the previous season. McKennie individually had an up-and-down year. He played consistently when healthy but he played all over the place and found positional consistency impossible to come by. He literally played Defensive Midfield, Attacking Midfield, Winger, Striker, Right Back, Right Wingback, Left Back, and Centerback at different points last season with varying results. While it’s a testament to his versatility and willingness to do whatever it takes to help hid club, the next step in his development has to be to make a position his. With the US, Berhalter seems to have settled on him as one of the dual 10’s for now. We’ll see if that continues internationally. Next season McKennie will have a new coach in David Wagner and it remains to be seen what the plans for McKennie will be in Wagner’s system.
