Restaurants, bars, breweries and bakeries, Salem's food scene has seen some exciting growth in 2019. Whether you're simply looking to try the hot new places while you're in town or need of an excuse to get out of the house for a little bit, here are all of the new restaurants and food trucks opened in the Salem area this year. 

Angel's Share Barrel House

Indian fry bread chicken tacos, a dessert with Marionberries and candied hazelnuts and wings with a Marionberry chipotle barbecue sauce at Angel's Share Barrel House in Turner on April 16, 2019. The taphouse and restaurant inside a church built in 1891 is scheduled to open in May.

Located in an entirely re-vamped historic church in Turner, this pub offers 32 taps pouring a variety of locally-brewed beers and ciders. A brief, but well-rounded menu from chef Jericho Thunder Weldon includes frybread tacos, Cajun-spiced chicharrónes, and a build-your-own bowl option. Daily specials, including deep-fried mac and cheese balls with honey sriracha sauce, keep things exciting.

Azul's Taco House

A variety of tacos are pictured at Azuls Taco House in west Salem on April 30, 2019.

More than 25 kinds of tacos are on offer at this Edgewater Street spot. Azul's is the first brick-and-mortar location for Victory Club and Vagabond Brewing chefs Tino Land and Augustine "J" Razo. Vegetarian tacos filled with chiles rellenos, vegan cilantro hummus tacos with grilled vegetables and salsa verde, low carb "romaine tacos", and lots of meaty options are available, too.

Bearscat Bakehouse

A selection of Bearscat Bakehouse doughnuts. The bakery opened on June 24, 2019 at 190 High Street SE.

A transplant from North Dakota, this new doughnut shop at Ferry and High Streets offers classic doughnut flavors and inventive combinations. Bearscat, according to owners Tina and Kevin Cavanagh, is a cowboy term for doughnuts.

Beloved Cheesecakes

This new cheesecake bakery in Silverton at 205 Oak St., Suite B opened in August. Owner Jen Jacobson baked her first cheesecake as a gift of gratitude for the staff at her son's school. A survivor of domestic violence, a mother of three sons and a recent graduate of Portland State University, Jacobson was able to open Beloved Cheesecakes thanks to the support of 196 backers of a successful crowd-funding campaign.

Bigwig Donuts

Salem's vegan community and those eating gluten-free already know all about this sweet little doughnut shop, but even omnivores should check it out. The cake-style doughnuts, which come in six flavors, are worth the splurge. Coffee lovers should also try the nitro espresso. A double-strength batch of nitrogen-charged cold-brewed coffee that is citrusy and creamy at once.

Blue Garden

The Blue Garden in Dallas on June 4, 2019. The restaurant re-opened last month after being closed for about 15 years.

A historic restaurant refurbished, visit Dallas' Blue Garden for diner breakfast and lunch classics. Chef Jaymen Schaecher's menu includes French toast crusted with Frosted Flakes and the Bigfoot and Eggs, a chicken-fried cube steak. There are two kinds of eggs Benedict and a plate of biscuits and gravy featuring Manager Kathy Orton's house-baked biscuits. They've recently added dinner service, too.

Brew Coffee & Tap House

During the day it's a coffee shop. In the evening it's a bar. Brew Coffee & Tap House, located on Edgewater Street in West Salem, has a warm, speakeasy vibe. In addition to a cocktail menu and 16 taps pouring a frequently-changing selection of 100% local beers and ciders, Brew has an all-day cafe menu of snacks and coffee drinks made using locally-roasted beans.

Chubby Panda Bao House 

Joseph Ngo's bright red food truck Chubby Panda Bao House opened on August 2. Seek them out soon at Beehive Station to try Ngo's menu of rice bowls, wings and bao, steamed buns stuffed with honey barbecued pork, Japanese-style fried chicken, or carne asada.

"The Hawaiian" dog features bacon, diced tomatoes, pineapple, and teriyaki sauce, at Deanie's Wienies, in Salem on October 25. Dean Ables, the self-proclaimed hot dog king of the Salem-Keizer area, has officially opened his first brick-and-mortar location.

Deanie's Wienies

The heart of the menu at Dean Able's new hot dog spot on Hyacinth is his namesake Deanies Wienie ($6), an all-beef dog made locally by Zenner’s. It’s served in a top-split New England-style hot dog bun that has been buttered, seasoned (using Ables’ secret spice blend), and crisped on the griddle. The price includes unlimited toppings from a list of more than 20 options. The rest of the menu includes a veggie dog by Field Roast, loaded tots, draft beers and ciders.

Dough Hook Bake Shop

Vanilla bean creme brulee, peanut butter marzipan, or raspberry with candied jalapeño,  pastry chef Guadalupe Alvarez Aguilar is pushing against the boundaries of Salem's doughnut scene with inventive flavors at Dough Hook Bake Shop. Besides doughnuts, the shop also offers a selection of French pastries, classic croissants and those filled with chocolate or ham and cheese. Fresh fruit danishes and the towering "cruffin" a sugar-dusted croissant-muffin hybrid promise flaky sweetness.

Eddy's Phillys

Eduardo Garcia isn't from Philadelphia, but it doesn't stop him from making a great Philly cheesesteak. Though not traditional by Philadelphia standards, the Jalapeno Cheesteak is a solid sandwich worth breakinf tradition for.

Epilogue Kitchen & Cocktails

Behind every dish at Epilogue there's a story and many of them reflect the heritage of owners Jonathan Jones and Maura Ryan. Go for Mid-Atlantic-inspired dishes including cheddar potato pierogi with caramelized onions and sauerkraut ($14), jerk-spiced rabbit confit ($22), and blue crab cakes with Old Bay remoulade and corn relish ($18). On a budget? The restaurant offers a monthly reservation-only cheap date night: 1 starter, 2 main dishes, 1 dessert, and a featured bottle of wine for $60.

Filberts Farmhouse Kitchen 

An order of crostini ($8) at Filberts Farmhouse Kitchen in Aurora, pictured here on Jan. 3, 2019, features prosciutto, basil puree, smoked Gouda, marinated tomato, baby arugula and balsamic glaze.

Aurora's newest eatery, Filberts fits right in among the nearby antique shops and hazelnut orchards. The menu is made up of American comfort food classics presented with a rustic touch. There's meatloaf, grilled salmon, and chicken and dumplings. Starters include deviled eggs ($9) each topped with a piece of hot sauce-spiked candied bacon. Round out any meal with a tiny skillet of cornbread ($8) heaped with honey butter and bacon marmalade.

Get Seom Aloha 

Hawaiian fusion food in plate lunch format is on offer at this food trailer. There's kalua pig and loco moco, chicken adobo and crispy chicken katsu, each available with rice and mac salad or sesame slaw.

Gyropoulos

Lamb Gyro ($9.50) at Gyropoulos in Salem, pictured on April 2, 2019.

The small blue and white cart has a short, straightforward selection of chicken and lamb gyros, shawarma, and platters. Javier Rodriguez, an experienced food truck entrepreneur behind Beehive Station's Super Teriyaki Bowl (and the now-shuttered Baketater and La Botana) he was inspired to open the gyro truck by his uncle from Volos, Greece who made recipe recommendations.

Lucky Dragon

General Tso's chicken, one of the Chinese American favorites at Lucky Dragon, a new restaurant in Independence.

Vacant for eight months after longtime tenant Happy Dragon restaurant made the move to Portland eight months ago, 101 Polk Street in Independence is now home to a new restaurant. Lucky Dragon focuses on Americanized Chinese food staples including General Tso’s chicken, broccoli and beef, and seafood with vegetables.

Ibendoo Ramen

There's an entire restaurant devoted to ramen and Japanese small plates on South Commercial Street. Open since mid-May, Ibendoo Ramen serves tonkatsu ramen, noodles in a rich, full-bodied broth made from long-simmered pork bones. The menu includes 12 different versions of the dish seasoned with various additions and toppings. There's also vegetarian ramen made with a miso broth and, though not traditional, a gluten-free version made with rice noodles.

In-N-Out Burger

Maybe you haven't heard but the northernmost location of In-N-Out Burger opened on December 12 in Keizer Station and the crowds are still showing up daily to get their hands on a double double. Pro tip: skip the drive through land where waits can run you anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours and park instead. The walk-up line to order moves more quickly.

Isaac's Downtown

Toast with avocado, micro greens, radishes, cracked black pepper and flaked sea salt at Isaac's Downtown in Salem on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019. The menu item is called Petaluma.

This second location owned by youth-focused non-profit organization Isaac's Room, Isaac's Downtown is an all-day cafe from the folks behind Ike Box. Since its January opening, it has become a downtown fixture, now offering happy hour in addition to breakfast, lunch, and desserts.

Jasmine Flower Thai Kitchen

A food cart from the family behind Jasmine Thai in Lincoln City, Tunya Dhevaphalin and her parents offer an extensive menu of the restaurant's 34 top-selling soups, curries, noodles, appetizers, rice dishes and stir-fries. Check the restaurant Facebook page for specials and additions.

Just Us Girls

A cute little coffee shop with vintage vibes, Just Us Girls is tucked into the 45th Parallel Building. The owners source coffee from neighbor Odolla Coffee Roasters to make a variety of espresso beverages and specialty lattes. The menu also includes 13 different fruit smoothies, Rolling Bagel bagels, muffins, scones, quiche and a selection of boards and savory items, too.

La Vida Catrina Kitchen of Mexico

Couple Oscar Flores and Isabel Hernandez have reopened the former Casa Rojas as new restaurant La Vida Catrina Kitchen of Mexico.  Flores and Hernandez previously operated a Don Flores Mexican Cuisine food truck in Tigard. In Salem, they aim to offer upscale takes on Mexican cuisine, including Prime skirt steak fajitas, shrimp and crab enchiladas, and fresh halibut tacos with baja cream sauce.

Manna Japanese Comfort Food

After several years cooking in a food truck, couple Emily Young and Francis Ho have moved indoors to open a sweet cafe. Manna's regular guests will recognize most of the menu from the truck, but there are a few additions as well as a liquor license in the works. Expect sushi burritos, Spam musubi, and warm dishes like Chicken Karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken), and Japanese curry and udon noodles.

Masonry Grill

The former Spaghetti Warehouse has had a major facelift and is now Masonryn Grill, a casual restaurant serving a menu of sandwiches, burgers, pastas and approachable salads. The full menu is available at the bar.

Noble Wave

The Hot 'Bird' Sandwich with fries at Noble Wave Restaurant and Brewery in downtown Salem on May 13, 2019. The Cajun, Creole and southern food restaurant and bar will open, starting with limited hours, on May 15.

A Louisiana meets Oregon mash-up of southern cuisine and local beer, Noble Wave opened its doors in May. Since then they've added brunch and lunch service. Don't miss Louisiana Poutine ($12), fries and cheese curds smothered in chicken and sausage gumbo. Bin-yay Fried Chicken Sliders ($10), fried chicken and coleslaw sandwiched between powdered sugar-dusted beignets (Louisiana's answer to fried dough) are also an original creation.

Oishi Hibachi Express

Oishi Express is a big, bright purple food truck serving up Americanized Japanese food. Think hibachi-grilled seafood, meats, vegetables, and noodles. Oishi, which means delicious in Japanese, is a worthy destination for those who like things a certain way: pick your protein or multiple-meat combo and either rice or noodles and owner Edward Zant will fry them up for you.

Sal's Del & Bistro

A breakfast bagel with lox, capers and onions is pictured at Sal's Deli in Salem on April 5, 2019. Breakfast is served all day at the new deli.

Aaron Heath, a real estate broker, grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn helping his mom with catering jobs. Now, he slow-smokes brisket over mesquite chips to make the pastrami he serves at Sal's NY Style Deli. The Pringle Plaza restaurant opened in April, and Heath is now offering daily specials including the lamb "Gyro Hero" in addition to his standard menu of sandwiches and salads. He recently shifted the concept to Sal's Deli & Bistro and added dinner service.

Shanghai's Best Street Food

Lin Chen's food cart specializes in sheng jian bao, a type of chubby dumpling that is pan-fried, then steamed. The resulting doughy parcels are chewy and slightly sticky on top with crunchy, browned bottoms. Chen forms each dumpling by hand, rolling the dough and crimping it into delicate pleats, each pattern signaling a different filling. There's chicken; pork; a crescent-shaped vegetarian dumpling filed with egg, chives and mung bean noodles; and a vegan version filled with tofu, mushrooms, carrot and celery.

Smooth

This kiosk in the parking lot of The Fussy Duck serves colorful smoothie bowls, salads, and avocado toasts. Owner Ron Juarez's recipes for smoothies and cold pressed juices often contain vegetables in addition to fruit for an added dose of nutrition.

Sweet Spot Fruit Tea & Desserts

A Taiwanese-style tea cafe, Sweet Spot offers fruit-infused teas, bubble tea, and other beverages made with a selection of premium tea. Co-owners Sandy Shen and Peter Li have remade the former Growl Movement space on South Commercial with a sunny, coffee shop atmosphere. The cafe also offers bubble waffles and Chinese baking, buns filled with barbecued pork, taro, cream or sweet red bean paste.

The Woods from Gilgamesh Brewing

A second location for Gilgamesh, The Woods is a big, West Salem bar featuring a pub menu very similar to that at The Campus, the brewery's original location. The Woodsfeatures eight flagship beers (12-ounces $5.50, 20-ounces $7.25, or a flight of six four-ounce samples is $8) as well as a rotating cider selection. There's also a full cocktail menu–Oregon rum punch, anyone?–and a modest selection of hyper-local wines from Eola, Cubanisimo, and Willamette Valley Vineyards.

Tiki Lounge

Tiki Lounge & Sports Bar is a new bar opening soon in East Salem.

Tiki Lounge is casual neighborhood bar now open on Lancaster Drive SE. Loosely tropical cocktails accompany a menu of fried appetizers, pizza, tacos and a guacamole bacon burger. On weekdays the bar hosts two happy hour windows, one from 4 until 6 p.m. and another from 12 to 2 a.m. Each features $2 off draft beers and top-shelf liquor.  Check the Facebook page to learn about upcoming DJ sets and other events.

Turner Baking

A new bakery from Nancy Walsh, owner of Turner's beloved Turnaround Cafe, Turner Baking Company mills some of it's own flour to add to a constantly rotating selection of breads from baker Aaron Brewer. Don't miss the fresh baguettes, the glossy braided challah. Go on Sundays for bagel day, or choose a pastry out of the case and the friendly staff will offer to warm it up for you.

Turn Here Bar & Grill

The Station Wagon, a pizza with pepperoni, Italian sausage, black olives, mushrooms, green peppers and red onion with mozzarella and a marinara sauce at the Turn Here Bar and Grill in Turner on April 24, 2019. The former garage, converted into a pizza parlor opened April 10.

You only need to know two things about this car-themed bar in Turner. First, it's a paradise for gear heads, car nuts, and anybody else who likes a bar loaded with memorabilia. Second, they make their own pizza dough for chubby pies and, still warm out of the oven, they brush the crust with garlic butter.

Victoricos Mexican Food

Cousins Ivan Orozco and Victor Sanchez grew up in a family that collectively owns seven Muchas Gracias Mexican Food restaurant locations throughout Oregon and Washington. They recently launched Victoricos, a fast casual franchise of their own and replaced several of their family's locations with the new brand. It's a casual take on tacos, tortas, burritos, etc. Instead of an endless menu of combination plates, there are ten. The menu includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Whiskey Brown's Farmhouse Kitchen 

Salem Golf Club's new restaurant is named for Issac "Whiskey" Brown, one of the two settlers who lived in the area now occupied by Minto-Brown Island Park. The restaurant is open morning to night with a parade of different menus. A breakfast menu that feels more like brunch; salads, sandwiches, and flatbread pizzas at lunch; and dinner options  on the elegant side, including steaks from Cedar Creek in Sisters and homey options like chicken pot pie, meatloaf or fish and chips.
